Kate and Prada arrived at Pandanwal in April of 2020. They were found on a horse dealer’s lot with green X’s spray painted on their rumps. They were hush horses. The thoroughbred racing industry’s dirty secret. The green X signifies that the horse is not to auction, but ship to slaughter, never be seen again. This is the thanks these girls got after years of racing and producing babies; when they were no longer making a profit for their owner, they were discarded like trash.

Thankfully for Kate and Prada, a kind group of people bought them from the dealer and asked us to take them. Like the others that came from auctions or dealers, these girls were extremely thin, sick, scared, and exhausted. Prada’s tale was caked so badly with mud and briars that we could not save it and had to cut it off (don’t worry, it grew back and it is beautiful!). With months of rehabilitation and a veterinarian approved re-feeding schedule, Kate and Prada flourished. Today, Kate, 22, and Prada, 24, are in good weight, healthy, and enjoying life with no expectations to run fast or have babies. They get to live out the rest of their days being loved and just being horses.
